Dusk

The small community resisting the Returning Sun

“Some day we will bring back to Nexis a sense of what’s best for everyone, and not just the Enlightened.”

  • Nyx

DESCRIPTION

Dusk is a small community of just over one hundred people, who livie inside of a remnant buried West of Nexis. It comprises survivors, exiles, revolutionaries, and outright criminals who have left Nexis for one reason or another. Their goal? To turn Nexis back into the hands of the people, and eliminating the caste system and the power discrepancies between the Brightbringers, the Enlightened, and everyone else.

  • Dusk remnant: The people of Dusk live in a crowded remnant that provides near-total protection from the Samsaran sandstorms. The challenge is getting to Dusk alive. Most people who choose to leave Nexis aren’t allowed to take Ventus Vials, as it’s a crime to join Dusk, and it’s the most obvious destination for leavers. Many will obtain their Ventus Vials through illegitimate means to make their journey. However, some stout and resourceful people might try to do it unvented, though almost none are successful.

  • The Purple Sand: The Deepblack Obsidian near Dusk colors the sand a deep purple instead of the typical orange-red of elsewhere in Samsara. The purple color has become a trademark of Dusk in some ways, but the sand is not just an aesthetic feature. It sticks to clothes and skin, and has some toxic properties if it’s present in a room where you bathe or sleep. If kept at bay with diligent cleaning, it’s harmless, though. At least, they think so.

  • Conflict: Dusk is a small, tight-knit community, but they differ greatly in how they think and act with regards to the problems of Nexis. Some are idealists focused on helping the people of Nexis, while others focus on getting retribution against the Brightbringers or Enlightened for their perceived crimes. While united against a common enemy, the people of Dusk are heavily divided in how to deal with that enemy.

  • On a Knife’s Edge: In Dusk, there are no inns, no stores, no bars… everything is a scrape to get from one cycle to the next. Goods are shared and distributed on a basis of who-needs-what. These goods are obtained from the surrounding remnants and monsters (i.e. meat) or stolen from Nexus in irregular raids that are getting harder and harder to accomplish with each passing cycle.

✎ Note:

Dusk only welcomes people into their community once they have participated in a supply raid on Nexis.

CULTURE

“They can’t stop us. They can’t stop me.

  • Seraphina

The people of Dusk are either very similar or complete opposites to the people of Nexis. For instance, Nexans almost never swear, although some Duskers take this as a challenge to see how many curse words they can fit into one sentence. For some Duskers, every word and action must be a rebellion against Nexis. For others, it’s a more nuanced conflict where they can still embrace Nexan culture while fighting against those in Power.

WORK AND LIFE

“Take my spare knife if I don’t make it back.”

  • Dusker Raider

Work is divided evenly in Dusk with shifts assigned to watch among other tasks.
